The History
of the Department


 
1957   Members of Danish Archaeological Expedition visit Ras al-Khaimah briefly but fail to note any archaeological sites (see Kuml 1965,1966 151-152).
 
1968   February - Miss Beatrice de Cardi & Brian Doe begin archaeological research in Ras al-Khaimah with the survey of its environs, identifying various sites such as Julfar, Dayya, Ghalilah, Shimal and Khatt.
 
1973   March - Iraqi archaeological team begins excavations at Julfar.
 
1974   April - Iraqi archaeological team finishes excavation at Julfar. Most of the finds in al-Ain museum and in Iraq.
 
1976   December - Peter Donaldson and John Hansman are invited to excavate some of the sites in Ras al-Khaimah. Tim Ash organises the project.
 December - January 1977? - Donaldson works on tombs at Shimal (1) and Ghalilah (2-5).
 
1977   Prof. Walter Dostal carries out a collection of ethnographic material.
Mr M. Bidston conducts a photographic survey with Mr Ali Omar.
Jayanth Laxman is employed as Museum draughtsman.
January/February - Hansman's first season at Julfar and Hulaylah.
de Cardi carries out 2nd archaeological survey in Ras al-Khaimah.
November/December - Hansman's second second season at Julfar and Ras al-Khaimah
 
1978   January - Donaldson excavates Shimal 6.
 
1982   January - de Cardi & Doe carry out first survey in 'Southern Enclave' - Wadi al-Qawr.
 
1983   Dostal's Architecture book published.
 
1984   Prof Schippman and Burkhard Vogt of Gottingen University apply to excavate at Shimal.
The fort is vacated by the Police and work begins on restoration of the building under Jayanth Laxman.
 
1985   Hansman's Julfar book published.
January - March? -Gottingen team 1st season, the Shimal settlement is discovered and partially excavated.
 
1986   Department of Antiquities and Museums is officially established with HH Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr as Director.
January - March - Gottingen team 2nd season, Shimal.
February- April -Carl Phillips of Edinburgh University begins work at Fashgha in the Wadi al-Qawr, Umm al-Nar tomb is discovered?
 
1987   Vogt & Franke Vogt's Shimal report is published.
Burhard Vogt is employed as Resident Archaeologist in National Museum.
January - March - Gottingen team 3rd season, Dayya, Shimal Umm al-Nar tomb discovered, Kastner field director.
February - March - Phillips' 2nd season, Rafaq and Munay'i?
November - National Museum is inaugurated on 19.11.87.
December - January 1988 - Vogt conducts two-month excavation of threatened monuments at Asimah.
 
1988   Vogt surveys the environs of Ras al-Khaimah and begins liason with Lands Department in order to preserve sites.
Julfar project conceived - Vogt excavates a test trench at Julfar to evaluate the situation in preparation for a large-scale interntional excavation project. Teams from Britain (King, London), France (Hardy-Guilbert, CNRS), Germany (Jansen, Aachen) and Japan (Sasaki, Kanazawa) join the project.
Vogt resigns from his post as Resident Archaeologist to take up a new post in Yemen.
Proforma for establishment of laboratory is signed by HH Sheikh Sultan.
Booklet on the National Museum is published with the help of BBME.

Ursula Binsfeld employed as Museum conservator.

March - Sheikh Khalid bin Majid al-Qasimi becomes Manager of Museum.
March - German Julfar 1st season, Sheba's Palace, Julfar.

1991   January - February - French & German Julfar seasons cancelled due to Gulf War.
5th March - 5th April - British Julfar 3rd season.
25th October - 10 December - British Julfar 4th season. Survey of Jazirat al-Hulaylah by Kennet and Yayiah al-Aqab.
December/January 1992 - Tower Survey by Kennet, D. Connolly and F. Baker.
 
1992   January - February - French Julfar 3rd season.
March - 12th April - German Julfar 2nd season, Julfar, Sheba's Palace.
21st April - 12th May - Geomorphological survey of Julfar hinterland by British team Brunsden, Goudie, Cook, Jones, Bush, Evans, Kennet.
October - de Cardi directs two-week survey of Khatt area with a small team.
November - 10th December - 5th and last season of British Julfar.
Stocks directs survey of Wadi Haqil.
13th December - 26th January 1993 - Japanese Julfar 5th season.
 
1993   25th January - 7th March - French Julfar 4th season.
March/April - Three minor rescue excavations are carried out by Dunlop at Khatt (areas 4, 22,101) after the Khatt survey.
December - Jay Laxman resigns from his post as Assistant to the Director of the Department.
British Julfar study season.
Muhammad Kunhi employed as Store Officer.
December - January 1994 - Japanese Julfar 6th season.
 
1994   Vogt's Asimah book published.
January - Kennet directs survey of sites in Northern Ras al-Khaimah, test trenches are dug at Kush, Khatt 3 and 5. Extensive bulldozer damage to Nud Ziba is discovered.
5th January - 7th March - French Julfar 5th season.
March - German Julfar 3rd season.
November - Kennet is employed as Resident Archaeologist on a six-month per year basis.
16th October - 5th November - Japanese Julfar study season.
5th November - 30th November - Japanese Hulaylah 1st season
December - A full computerised catalogue of the Museum collection is begun.
 
1995   Kennet's Tower book published.
January - Excavation of the old 'Sheekh's House' in Ras al-Khaimah by Kennet.
Anna Taylor joins Museum as a volunteer to help with the catalogue.
February - Velde and Mollering catalogue Shimal finds.
March - 4th and last season of German Julfar, Sheba's Palace.
1st April - 4th May - French Julfar study season.
April - Vogt Idhn 1st season.
July - Firdous Khan deceased in Pakistan.
19th November - 7th January 1996 - Japanese Hulaylah 2nd season, first evidence of structures.
4th December - 14th January 1996 - Kush 1st season.
 
1996   25th March - Belgian team under Didier Willems conducts a survey of the old Mosques of Ras al-Khaimah, sponsored by Woolwich Building Society.
April - Vogt Idhn 2nd second season. Exavation of Shimal 600.
November - December - Kush 2nd season
 
1997   January - March - Kennet’s Excavation of Shimal 601 and 1st season on Shimal/Umm an-Nar 2.
April - Japanese Hulaylah 3rd season
June - Christian Velde is employed by the Department to prepare the final Publication of the German Shimal Excavations (1985 - 1990)
November - December - Kush 3rd season.
Kennet resigns for new job at the University of Durham.
 
1998   Christian Velde newly appointed as Resident Archaeologist.
January - February - Beatrice de Cardi catalogues the finds of the Wadi al-Qawr Excavations.
February - March - 2nd Season on Shimal/Umm an-Nar 2.
April - Robert Carter’s Survey of the proposed Free Trade Zone Area in Hulaylah.
November - December - Kush 4th season.
